Yorkshire and Humber’s food and drink sector saw exports increase to £1.2bn in the year to June 2018, a year on year rise of 7.9% according to the latest HMRC figures.
The greatest export growth during the period was in sugar (up 38% to £62m), as well as dairy and hens’ eggs (up 19% to £79m). Fish products were the most popular food and drink exports, totalling £670m.
The figures also reveal that more companies in the region are targeting Australia which saw a 32% rise in food and drink from the region in the 12 months to June 2018 compared with the previous year.
Among the Yorkshire food and drink firms benefiting from demand for British produce is Leeds brewer Northern Monk Brew Co which now exports to 22 countries including France, Japan, New Zealand and the US. The company hopes to increase its turnover to £4m by the end of the year, helped by overseas sales.
The brewery has been supported by the Food is GREAT campaign, the government initiative which showcases UK food and drink overseas, and help firms export.
Mark Robson, head of regions, Yorkshire and the Humber at DIT, said: “There are many Yorkshire and the Humber food and drink firms, from breweries to ice-cream makers, that are experiencing phenomenal success thanks to exporting.
