US export success for Yorkshire firms

Two businesses in Leeds have expanded into the US market after agreeing export deals worth a combined £14m.

Ambient food manufacturer Symington's Ltd has secured a deal with retail giant Walmart which will see its Naked Noodle brand sold in 3,000 stores across the US.

Symington's is aiming to generate $10m (£8m) in US retail sales value during the next two years.

Scott Hall, export account manager at Symington's, said: "Symington's has enjoyed great success across both domestic and global markets. This deal with Walmart is fantastic news for our business, and reflective of the growing strength of our Naked brand.

"The relationship with Walmart holds huge potential for both companies. We are excited about building on this initial success into 2020 and beyond, as we look to emulate Naked's phenomenal UK growth in the States."

Meanwhile, refund protection specialist Booking Protect is joining forces with a business in California in a deal expected to produce approximately £6m in revenue over the next five years.

The company's specialist technology allows ticket retailers to offer refundable tickets to their customers. Around 65 per cent of its turnover is now generated by its exports to 11 countries.

Chief executive of Booking Protect, Simon Mabb, added: "The support we've had from the Department of International Trade has been key to us winning this new contract and it sets us up to expand further into the US and the rest of the world knowing we have this support behind us.

"We have already created two further jobs off the back of this with more planned for the future which can only be good news for our business and the local community."
